Although there are several types of medication for anesthesia and these drugs are very common, there are some facts that many may not be aware of. This post seeks to inform the readers some facts about anesthesia.

1. Smokers Need More Anesthesia
Anesthesiologists have observed that people who smoke may need more anesthetics than those who don’t. According to a research presented at the 2015 ESA, it was found that most of the smokers required an extra 30% of anesthesia as compared to non-smokers during operations. Also, smokers were found to have required painkillers post-surgery.

2. Waking Up During Surgery
Although this is extremely rare, it is possible that a patient may wake up during an operation. This condition is known as “anesthesia awareness”, and the occurrence is seen during general anesthesia. Anesthetic medications have the tendency to cause pain relief and unconsciousness to prevent movement. If these two effects fail to take place then the chances of the patient to wake up during the operation increases.

According to a journal published in 2013 – Anesthesia & Analgesia, nausea that people get to post and anesthesia medication can be greatly reduced, if not go away completely, with the help of aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is a relatively inexpensive treatment and can be used by most patients.

4. Obesity Can Increase Complications
According to a research conducted by ASA patients who are obese are unable to get the best of anesthetic medications. There are also high chances and risks that there may occur breathing difficulties during operations due to obesity.

Dr. Maulik Shah, a veteran anesthesiologist at Main Apollo Hospital Chennai also mentioned that in some extremely rare cases memory loss is also a possible side effect of an anesthetic medication. Although some of these negative outcomes may be difficult to avoid, obesity and smoking can be avoided by the wise use of our will.
